The Dangers of Lipotourism

In a world of glossy magazines and models being photoshopped like crazy, many long to get extreme makeovers –a little nip and tuck for that flabby belly, breast implants or a facelift. For most of us, such an extreme makeover can’t be done because of financial concerns. However, with the recent boom in the medical tourism industry, these dreams are slowly coming back to life especially when one says that you can get breast implants at 50% of the regular costs in the United States.

A report done by Dateline NBC’s Victoria Corderi back in 2005 however may scare lipostourists even if the medical tourism fiasco happened in the Dominican Republic years ago.

Former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano died in 2009 from complications after surgery was done on her buttocks. Sure, the price of beauty entails some pain but it doesn’t mean you have to die from it.

A friend of the former beauty titlist Robert Piazza said that certain medications went to Ms. Magnano’s lungs and brain killing her afterwards.

One has to note though that there are success stories as well when it comes to lipotourism. Although Latin America has been tainted with bad press in the past few years due to the number of malpractice cases and deaths, there are some medical tourism destinations that offer safe plastic surgery. One good example is Mexico.

However, if you are already scared of going to South America to get your makeover, you can always get it from countries like Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines.

This is not to say that you should steer clear from Latin American medical tourism hotspots, but should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of boarding a plane to get liposuction overseas.
