Cosmetic surgery abroad, is it worth the risk?

Cosmetic surgery is a booming industry. As of the past few years over a million Americans fly to medical tourism destinations to avail of affordable cosmetic procedures they could only dream of at home.

The cost of cosmetic surgery in the US is rather steep so more Americans are going abroad just to get under the knife. One favorite destination is Costa Rica –a tropical paradise located in Latin America known for its vast rain forests and its beautiful beaches.

Another thing that the country is known for is the number of plastic surgeons that never seem to run out of clients or patients for that matter.

Statistics show that individuals wanting to go under the knife save around 70% from cosmetic procedures in the Latin American country.

Back in 2007, gastric bypass surgery only costs $10, 000 but when one undergoes this very same surgery in the United States, one would have to pay a little over $40, 000.

Other cosmetic procedures are also a lot cheaper in Costa Rica making the medical tourism destination a wonderful choice for many Americans who want to go through an extreme makeover.

Sure, the idea of going to a tropical paradise where you can get the makeover of your dreams is quite tempting but those who are planning to go under the knife should keep in mind that this will be quite a journey. Whether you are planning to go to Costa Rica or other medical tourism hotspots, it is best to do some research. In fact, I encourage you to do research in detail since there are risks involved. It’s not as if you are getting a machine fixed, it is your body that the surgeons will be “fixing” and there are just things they cannot control –they are not god after all.

If you are bent on going under the knife, go to a reputable medical tourism agency that has a list of hospitals that offer high quality care.
